Photographing toddlers (and those who have just left toddlerhood and entered the 3-5 year old range) can sometimes be tricky. This is especially true if we’re dealing with a few at a time! Getting outdoors for a session like this is the perfect way to allow children to let off some steam, run around a bit, and interact without the session feeling too rehearsed. I love playing peek-a-boo, tag, and “make-a-funny-face” games with little ones in this age range. It’s a great way to get authentic smiles and natural looking family portraits while allowing the kids to forget there’s a camera involved. This is a great thing to remember when taking your own images as well. Instead of asking for a “cheese”, play a game! Most importantly, watch for the moments in between. That moment after a reaction is often the most genuine.
